Arithmetic
Arithmetic is the foundation of all mathematics. Every math course you will ever take — algebra, geometry, statistics, calculus — builds directly on these skills. This section covers everything from whole number operations through integers, organized so you can start wherever you need to and work forward at your own pace.
What You Will Learn
This section is organized into six topic groups that follow the standard progression used in developmental math courses and adult education programs:
- Whole Numbers — place value, the four operations, factors and multiples, primes, exponents, order of operations, and number properties
- Fractions — fraction concepts, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, mixed numbers, and all four operations with fractions
- Decimals — place value, rounding, operations with decimals, and converting between fractions, decimals, and percents
- Ratios and Percents — ratios, unit rates, proportions, percent calculations, percent change, and real-world applications like tax, tips, and interest
- Integers — signed numbers, absolute value, and operations with positive and negative numbers
- Measurement — US customary and metric units, unit conversions, time, temperature, and estimation strategies
Where to Start
If you are completely new to math or starting over after a long break, begin with Place Value and Number Sense in the Whole Numbers group.
If you are brushing up on specific skills — fractions for a trade program, percentages for work, or integers before starting algebra — jump directly to the topic group you need. Each group starts with the fundamentals and builds from there.
If you are not sure where your gaps are, try the first practice problem set in each group. If you can solve them easily, move to the next group. If not, that is where to focus.
