Pre-Algebra

Pre-Algebra is the bridge between arithmetic and algebra. If you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, you are ready to start here. This section builds the skills you need before tackling Algebra 1 — working with negative numbers, fractions, ratios, exponents, and the most important new idea: using variables to represent unknown quantities.

Who Is This For?

Pre-Algebra is designed for:

  • Adult learners returning to math after time away
  • GED and SAT test prep — these exams assume fluency with foundational topics
  • Vocational students who need number sense before learning trade-specific formulas
  • Homeschool families covering the standard Grade 6–8 math progression

If basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of whole numbers) still feels shaky, start with our Arithmetic section first.

What You Will Learn

Pre-Algebra covers six areas, each building on the last:

  1. Number Sense — factors, multiples, prime factorization, and the GCF/LCM
  2. Fractions, Decimals, and Percents — operations and conversions between all three forms
  3. Ratios and Proportions — rates, unit rates, cross-multiplication, and scale factors
  4. Exponents and Roots — powers, square roots, cube roots, order of operations, and scientific notation
  5. Introduction to Variables — expressions, evaluating, combining like terms, and the distributive property
  6. Equations Preview — one-step and two-step equations, basic inequalities, and the coordinate plane

Where to Start

Begin with the Number Sense cluster if you want a thorough review. If you are comfortable with factors and multiples, skip ahead to Introduction to Variables — that is where the algebra-specific thinking begins.

What Comes Next

After Pre-Algebra, move to Algebra 1 for linear equations, graphing, systems, polynomials, factoring, and quadratics. Everything in Algebra 1 assumes you are comfortable with the skills covered here.
